The Pentecost
Artist: Andrea di Cione.
Date: 1365-1370.
Size: 71 5/8 x 98 1/16 in. (182 x 249 cm).
Medium: Tempera on panels.
Location: The Orcagna Room.
Remarks: The moment in which the Holy Spirit, symbolized by a white dove on the top, appears as tongues of fire and descends upon the Apostles and the Virgin Mary. The event, narrated in the Acts of Apostles (2, 1-4). Commissioned in 1365 to Orcagna for the high altar of the Church of Apostle Saints in Florence.
